How to treat a dog with severe itching and rashes all over its body?

Hi, Snow is a Indian female stray dog, I have been seeing her since last few days that she is having itching for almost 24hrs and developed rashes all over her body. Pls find attached pics for ur reference. Pls advise on her treatment, is Neomec 10mg , Augmentin (both in half qty) will cure her?

Hello. Antibiotics may help, but probably will not cure Snow. I would recommend weekly medicated baths using a product with benzoyl peroxide &/or weekly dipping with a product containing lime sulfur. This is antibacterial & antifungal & will also kill some parasitic mites. Weekly treatments for a month is often very helpful & may be curative. If you think she needs antibiotics, it is best to see a veterinarian as to what is best & how much to give. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snow. You can try to bathe her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula as this can help to soothe the skin. This should help it to heal a bit and reduce her desire to itch. If not, she will need to see a veterinarian though. I hope this information helps!

Betty looks generally red, so my biggest suspicion is that she has environmental allergies. However, mange should be ruled-out as a cause as well. The antibiotics are great for treating secondary bacterial infections of the skin, but will do nothing for the primary cause of the itching. She needs to go back to the vet and get the primary cause of the itching diagnosed and treated in order to keep this from getting worse. With appropriate treatment, we can often get this problem under control. For now, it's good to give a bath with just cool water once to twice a day. This will help to relieve the skin and possibly flush away any environmental alergins. I hope that helps and Betty gets better soon.

For these, I recommend topical therapy and skin supplementation. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I treat bacterial skin infections with oral antibiotics, medicated baths that get bacteria (miconazole just gets yeast) and since this is chronic I would recommend a prescription novel protein or hydrolyzed diet to rule out food allergies as the cause. I would also start an oral antihistamine and Omega 3 fish oils. I tell my clients with chronic allergies to expect to be on apoquel, a special diet, an antihisamine and Omega 3 fish oils for the rest of the pets life. If there is a pustule (white head) the Vet can culture that to be sure that the correct antibiotic is chosen. It takes 3 weeks or longer to clear a bacterial skin infection with the correct antibiotic, this requires you to follow up with your vet to be sure the infection is 100% gone before the antibiotic is stopped. Hi, it really depends if it’ just a form of dermatitis or secondary to a systemic illness. If it’s just dermatitis a course of antibiotics should clear it. I would recommend that she is also treated for skin parasites. Hope this helps

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Tyson! Sadly I think Tyson has allergies. Allergies can cause skin infection. The description of white pustules usually means a bacterial skin infection. Since he has had rounds of antibiotics I recommend culturing one of the pustules to see if it is from a resistant bacteria. Tyson is an allergic breed. I would recommend skin allergy testing and putting Tyson on a strict prescription hydrolyzed diet like Hill's z/d, Royal Canin HP or Purina HA. NO other foods can be given. I would start and keep him on an Omega 3 fatty acid and an antihistamine. A medicated shampoo can also help with preventing and controlling outbreaks. Dogs with allergies is very frustrating and you are lucky if they are on one thing to control them. If he is scratching he should be on either apoquel or cytopoint. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir

I am so sorry that Stacy is having this skin issue. It looks like it could be an infection and the infection may have been caused by allergies. She may need not just antibiotics but a topical shampoo also with an anti-fungal component. I would also rec something to control the itching in Stacy, if she is itching. A food trial is great, but the only way to rule out food allergy completely is putting her on a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet that you can get from your vet. It can also take from 8-12 weeks for the food to actually work. Different diseases that can cause skin issues are Hypothyroid and Cushing's disease. She is very young to have already developed one of these but it is not impossible. I would recommend bringing her back to your veterinarian and doing possibly a different course of medication like a different antibiotic with an anti-fungal and with something to stop the itching. If this is a recurring skin issue, he most likely had an underlying allergy. It could be an allergy to environmental things, or an allergy to the protein in the food. You can treat the infection, but it will keep returning if the underlying issue isn't also addressed. I would talk with your veterinarian about allergies. The antibiotics are not too harsh, and won't cause kidney damage

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Poor Snow! Her skin looks really reactive. I really think you should take Snow to your vet for an exam at your earliest convenience. She may need oral antibiotics or some anti-inflammatory medications. I don't think it is an emergency though. To me it looks like a contact dermatitis (allergy). Poison ivy is possible but it is actually pretty rare in dogs. Benadryl is fine to give but you need to make sure you are giving enough. Dogs take a MUCH higher dose than we do. The dose is 1mg/pound of body weight. For example, 25 pound dog should get one 25mg capsule/tablet. If she is 50 pounds, then 2 of the 25mg capsules. You can round up if needed as it is pretty safe to give. She can have that every 12 hours.
