My cat just died. How can I cope with the loss and what should I do?

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, the only way unfortunately to try to determine why would be a post-mortem exam. I recommend you contact your vets office to discuss this, especially if there are other kittens in the house or other cats are showing any unusual signs

Beethoven was a beautiful cat. I am so very sorry you lost him. It's hard but you eventually become accustomed to the difference and you'll remember the cute things he did and how much he loved you more than the pain of loss. I have been through it myself a number of times and will again, because I don't think I could ever be without a cat in my life. When you're ready, adopting another cat may help ease your sorrow and help you build new happy memories.

I stayed by her side 21 days and when I left for one night she died in hospital on her own. I wonder if she was scared and frightened and I wasn’t there.. I also feel bad for trying to make her move, as they advised me to do, because she was in pain and since she passed away probably didn’t need the extra aggravation. Hello and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your kitty. It is so heart breaking to lose them. Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. It is very possible she was injured in the fall and that caused her passing, or there may have been an underlying health issue that caused it as well, however without an exam or necropsy (animal autopsy) it would be impossible to say what caused her passing. I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your pet. I am not sure how old she was, but losing a pet no matter how old or young is still hard to cope with. Over time it does get a little easier to cope with this lose and you should always cherish the good moments you had with your pet. As a side, you do have the option of getting any pet a necropsy (examination of the body rigth after they pass) to hopefully determine the cause of death. It is impossible to know for sure what caused her demise based on the symptoms you described but it is possible she may have had a stroke, an underlying heart condition or cancer. Without an autopsy, my best guess would be heart disease. Cats get a heart disease called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, where the heart muscle is abnormally thick and doesn't pump blood effectively. Often and tragically the first symptom of this disease is sudden death. Little One could be grieving the loss of her brother - this is quite common. The surviving pet's routines and life are suddenly different and their playmate is gone, so they experience true loss. Depending on how recently your boy passed away, I might be concerned about a toxin making them both sick. If you know about any potential toxin exposure or if there is mouse bait in or around your home, Little One needs to go to the emergency vet right away. His untimely death could have been due to a heart condition leading his heart to fail. Any underlying systemic disease that was going on that you did not know about could have progressed to the point where it overwhelmed James' system leading to his acute death. Unfortunately, it is difficult to speculate as there can be so many causes. There was something going on internally that lead to your cats demise. Kidney disease, a bacterial infection, liver disease, and cancer are just some of the things that could have been going on with Old kitty. Most vets offer to perform a necropsy (examination of the body to try and determine cause of death) service. If interested you can ask your vet about this and the cost associated with it. I'm so sorry this happened. Unfortunately there is no way for us to tell you why she died by looking at some photos. If you want to know for sure you will need to have a vet do an autopsy. If this way a young cat the two most common reasons for sudden death are trauma (like hit by a car) or poison ingestion.
