My dog's paw nail is bent and he whimpers. Is it broken or infected?

Hi! My dog hurt his paw, well the nail, more likely. It had grass strands logged between layers and is now somewhat bent. Has he broken his finger? Do I need to leave it alone? He whimpers, and I worry about possible infections, even though I saw no blood

Poor O! He may have broken a toe or just the nail. Even breaking the nail can be quite painful. Leave it be tonight, and take him into a vet first thing in the morning. Rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to potty on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. In the morning, the vet can treat it as well as giving him antibiotics and safe pain medication. I hope this helps.

It sounds like his toe may be broken. It is not an emergency but you should take Frecky to your vet for an exam when you can. Often times broken toes are not fixed surgically but they do need to be immobilized in order to heal. This entails putting him in a splint bandage for a month or so until the fracture is healed. A soft bandage is not enough support as he can still move the toe. Every time that toe moves, the fracture moves and therefore it does not heal or it won't heal straight. It may be that only the nail is broken. That would be the best case scenario. In this instance the broken portion of the nail needs to be removed and then a soft bandage can be applied just to protect the nail for a few days and then it can be removed. Your vet can also prescribe some pain medications as obviously he is in pain based on your description. If you absolutely cannot get him to the vet then all you can do is what you have already done. That's a good first step! Keep it covered tonight, and put a cone on Benji to keep him from licking his paw. You can make one at home. Then have him seen by a vet in the morning to get this treated. Do not feed him in the morning as he will likely have to be sedated to get the nail removed without pain. The vet can also prescribe pain relief and antibiotics. sudden trauma to nail caught when out walking. bleeding stopped quickly. still limping three days later. nothing to see. shall we keep bathing and give pain relief? thanks
Please don't give any over-the-counter pain medications; they can be toxic to dogs at even low doses and giving them will confound your vet's ability to treat the pain with appropriate medications. The reality is that most of these nail injuries end up getting infected, and even if there's no infection they are exquisitely painful. You can compare it to losing your fingernail completely, but then having to walk on the uncovered cuticle. Patch likely needs to have the area numbed and the remaining nail pulled, then have a very soft/cushioning bandage placed, followed by antibiotics and pain medication. Please take him in to see his vet as soon as you can for this.

My dog's nail bent sideways and bled a little. The entire nail is still attached, but he doesn't let me touch it. What should I do?
By your description, your dog may have a partially [broken nail](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/broken-nails/) which can be a bit painful. You can take him to your veterinary office and ask them to cut the nail back to promote normal growth, or you can monitor the toe and see if the nail grows out naturally. Just watch for any signs of infection (redness, swelling, discharge) in the toe. Do not allow your dog to lick or chew at it. An e-collar (cone) can be placed on him until he has healed.

My dogs nail has bent sideways (thumb nail) but it's not giving her any grief until I go to touch it I was wondering what to do about it?
I would recommend doing a light bandage wrap of the area using cast padding and an elastic bandage for now. Then in the morning have a professional take a look at it. They will have to cut the nail pretty much all the way down to where it is bent, this will cause some bleeding and mild-moderate temporary discomfort, which they can then apply the appropriate anti-coagulant, typically Quik-stop, to the area and wrap it for a couple of days until the area is no longer painful.. If there is significant swelling of the nail base then they may prescribe anti-inflammatories.

My pup has been limping off and on again but for the most part acting completely normal.he looks to have broken one of his nails and is paw is red(probably from him licking it)should I be concern or will it clear up with time?
You are correct in that it looks like Ollie has damaged a toe nail. This can be quite painful to dog and would explain the limping. Be sure to keep him from licking the nail. If he does, it is easy for an infection to occur. As long as the lameness is resolving and the toe does not become swollen, he should heal up fine. If either of those things occur though, he will need to see his veterinarian. I hope this helps and Ollie is back to normal soon!

I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian. He should get antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. If not treated appropriately these can sometimes create a bone infection, which can take a long time to clear up and be very painful for the dog. The nail also may need to be pulled off and the paw bandaged so it stays clean and Sullivan does not lick at it. I would call your veterinarian in the morning and if you cannot get in right away I would recommend getting a bootie from a pet store to cover the toe. I would not bandage the toe I would just place the bootie on if you cannot get to your veterinarian tomorrow. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

My dog's front paws are swollen and a bit bloodied. The left one seems to be caused by a broken nail. What can I do to clean and treat it, and what can I give him to help with the swelling?
Broken nails are quite painful. The bleeding tells me the quick is involved, which is the blood supply as well as nerve supply, so he may not let you touch it. Ideally the broken part should be removed but this often requires sedation by a vet. I recommend soaking his paw in an epsom salt tub for 5-10 minutes 2-3 times daily to clean it, draw out discharge, and help soften any part of the nail that is compromised. Watch for swelling or discharge that would indicate infection (and would require a vet visit). Unfortunately there is no human drug that is safe to give him for pain & inflammation but a vet could provide you with something. Again, these are painful especially if the quick is exposed so he will be tender until the broken part has come off and the exposed quick has hardened. Hope this helps.

My dog has torn his nail and it's bent to a 90 degree angle, it's not loose enough for me to pull off nor do I think it will fall off. There's no bleeding at the moment.
I would suggest a vet visit for Rev. These broken nails can be extremely painful. The vet office may sedate him and/or give pain meds then cut the nail flush to the paw pad. Many of these need a few days of pain medication as well. Be sure not give otc pain medications to dogs.

My dog has caught his claw on something and it has split and bent. He licks it occasionally, is walking fine but worries if he thinks we are going to touch it. He doesn't appear to be in pain but was limping earlier this morning. Any advice please?
Ouch! That looks pretty split and should be trimmed back, especially if he is licking at it or limping as that can indicate pain. I would bring him to your vet so that he can be sedated and given some pain meds to make trimming any painful parts of the nail easier on him. Your vet can also provide you with longer-term pain meds and an antibiotic as needed to help it heal.
