Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 16 lbs
My cat goes to the litter box, digs a bit, then squat down like he wants to pee/poop, but he doesn't actually go. Then he'll walk away, sit for a bit, then return and do the same thing. What's wrong with him and how can I help?

Oh no, that's not good. This can be a sign of a blockage in the urethra from bladder stones. A urethral blockage is fatal without treatment, and since I can't see Mittens in person to rule one out, I think it's best to take him into a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

If Pepper is straining to urinate, this can be a sign of a urethral blockage. A urethral blockage is fatal without treatment, and since I cannot see him in person to rule this out, he has to see a vet now. Please take him into one immediately.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would take Julie in IMMEDIATLEY to your vet or the nearest emergency vet. She is showing signs of being blocked. This is much less common in females than in males but it is life-threatening either way. A feel by a vet or an experienced tech can help determine right away if she i blocked. The other, more common reason for these signs would be a urinary tract infection or other lower urinary tract disease. Best wishes to you and Julie!
