years ago my beagle cracked his tooth. Now that tooth is turning black and he will not chew on that side. The rest of his teeth look fine and he gets the brushed and cleaned at the groomers. What should can I do for him? His vet wants between $600 and $1,200 and I am a single mom on a budget. Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | neutered | 7 years and 4 months old | 28 lbs

This could be the result of a pulpal hemorrhage, pulpitis and pulpal necrosis secondary to the trauma. Pulpitis produces toothache. Should non-vital pulps become infected, abscessation may occur. There are usually two options in these cases: root endodontic canal therapy (more expensive and usually done by specialists) and dental extraction (often surgical) which should cost in between approximately 300-500USD.
