My dog ate a wild mushroom and is acting strange. Is he poisoned?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 months and 4 days old | 62 lbs

My 11 month old Australian Sheppard mix ate a wild grass mushroom while on his walk and I am not sure if I should rush him to the ER he is acting stranger then normal. He keeps whining and looking to his rear end. I don’t know if they are poison or not

The problem is that some mushrooms are toxic to dogs, and without seeing Zed in person, I don't know if he's ok or not. Given that he's acting stranger than usual, I would take him into an ER vet now.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I am concerned that because he vomited so many times and had diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated. Also, mushrooms can result in liver toxicity in dogs that tends to be significant. Even if he vomited some of it, there is still likely some left in his system. I think it would be best to have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check some basic lab work to check for signs of liver toxicity and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a great day!

Certain species of mushrooms are toxic to dogs, but without knowing the mushroom Lugosi ate, I can't say for certain if you should be concerned. Check out this website that has pictures of five common mushrooms that are toxic to dogs, and if he ate one of those, take him into an ER vet immediately. Hello, my puppy was in the yard and started to eat a mushroom. I took it away from her and she had only been out for a minute so I think that was the first one she was getting into. Please see attached pics- she seems fine, any idea if this is poison
How naughty of Sadie! You did the right thing by taking the mushroom away from her. Unfortunately, mushrooms can be very tricky to identify accurately. Many species of mushrooms can lead to neurologic changes or liver damage when ingested by dogs. I recommend taking Sadie to your vet or an emergency clinic right away so that vomiting can be induced (assuming that she ate the mushroom within the past 2 hours) and supportive medications can be started. It is likely that Sadie may need to have blood testing performed today and repeated in 1-2 days to assure that her liver values remain stable. Even though she may have only eating a very small amount of the mushroom, problems could still arise and it is better to be safe than sorry. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Sadie!

My puppy threw up a bunch of white mushrooms, assumingly from the neighbor’s yard. The emergency vet said to monitor him and call our vet in the morning but i wanted to know what I need to look out for or if he’s in the clear since he threw up?
Unfortunately I'm not sure what species these mushrooms are - I think even a mushroom expert would have difficulty identifying mushrooms that have been ingested and then vomited. Various mushrooms can cause gastrointestinal upset, bloody diarrhea, hallucinations, muscle tremors, or in rare situations liver failure. If Ace vomits again, develops diarrhea, seems disoriented or has muscle tremors I would recommend contacting the emergency vet. If they did not perform screening blood work that might be a good idea as well. I'm hoping the mushrooms were benign and Ace will be feeling fine in the morning!

Oh no, that's not good of Lulu to eat! The majority of mushrooms are non-toxic to dogs, but there are a small number of them that are toxic. You have two options in this case. To be safe, you can take her into a vet now. There will be a vet on call for emergencies in your area, and the information to reach that vet on call will be found on a clinic's answering machine or website. You could also choose to monitor Lulu. If you see any vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, weakness, lethargy, yellowing of the skin, uncoordinated movement, drooling, or seizures, then she will need to see a vet immediately.

Are any of these mushrooms poisonous for my pup?
These mushrooms look like "Lawyer's Wig", or shaggy ink cap mushrooms. They are edible when young. However there are poisonous lookalike mushrooms. I would not let my dog eat them as it is not proven that they are not poisonous to dogs. Watch for diarrhea, vomiting, general malaise and if you see those signs, take your dog to your veterinarian for an exam.

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. Moldy food can produce serious problems, like uncontrolled twitches, lack of balance, hypersalivation or even seizures. It usually takes 1-6hrs after ingestion of mold for the symptoms to develop. If Indy is acting normal and he is not showing any of these symptoms, you should monitor him at home. However, if he starts acting strange, if he develops muscle twitches and problems with walking you should take him to your vets as an emergency.

If your dog has eaten a strange object that you don't know the origin of it is best to seek veterinary care immediately. While some toxic substances can show immediate signs such as drooling, unstable gait, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, etc, others may cause internal issues such as organ damage that can't be outwardly seen. A complete exam and blood work to check values, especially if your dog ate something strange, is best to make sure there isn't an issue.

This is an emergency. If you suspect a pesticide you should call the pet poison control helpline. Otherwise, when I see older animals present this way through the ER I am very worried about abdominal bleeding from a tumor. I would not wait. He should be see by a vet ASAP.
