My puppy has loose stool, sleepy, but still eating. Should I worry?

Our puppy had a loose stool earlier and has been very sleepy. He is still eating and drinking. Should we be really concerned, and what should we do? He doesn't seem to be in pain.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Jack. I wouldn't be too worried just yet as he has only had one loose stool. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Diarrhea isn't normal. Possible causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, ate something outside that is upsetting his stomach, reaction to new food/treat/table food or food allergy. I would highly recommend feeding him a commercial balanced puppy food. At 7 weeks of age he should be fully weaned and eating puppy food. I like Hill's Science diet, Royal Canin and Purina Prolplan. If the diarrhea continues then he should be dewormed and examined by a Vet. I wish you the best!

I have a 16 year old mini dachshund who I tried a different food on yesterday. A few hours after she ate it she had loose stools/mild diarrhea and then was fine. This afternoon she had a firm stool followed immediately afterward by dark soft stool.

Hello, & thank you for using Boop by Petco. Yes, this is very appropriate. You should try to keep the diet 25% boiled chicken to 75% boiled white rice feeding small meals several times a day. As long as there is no vomiting, you can do this for about a week before trying to transition back to the regular diet. I would also add a probiotic to help heal the gut microbiome. If the diarrhea is not improving with the bland diet & probiotics, then please consult with Jack's regular vet to see what else may be needed to clear up the diarrhea. Hope he is well soon. Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. Diarrhea can be caused by many things such as diet, intestinal parasites and viral infections. I would recommend initiating a bland diet as outlined below. However, with the symptoms you have described, it sounds as though he may also be dehydrated. I would recommend taking him in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. He may need fluids administered under the skin for hydration and further testing (parvo testing) since he is so young and still has the potential to come down with parvo if he has come in contact with it. I would recommend putting him on a bland diet. Due to his age I ideally would recommend a prescription diet but since the holiday is approaching you can always do boiled chicken and white rice. If the stool doesn't resolve or gets worse then I recommend taking him to a veterinarian and having them deworm him and check a stool sample for intestinal parasites.
