What causes a sudden golfball-sized lump with a scab on my dog's leg?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 8 years and 10 months old | 65 lbs

I have a 10 year old lab/pit mix that has a golfball size mass on her leg around her hip. It seemed to appear rather suddenly and it does have a scabby spot like she maybe was bitten by something

I'm sorry but it is highly unlikely we can tell you what caused this lump just by looking at a photo. What I can tell you is that lumps are usually one of the following: * cyst * abscess (infection) * tumor (benign or malignant) Your vet will be able to give you a better idea after they examine her and feel the bump. It is not an emergency. Just get her to your vet for an exam when you can schedule the appointment. It does not look like a bug bite to me.
