Dog coughing, won't drink water. Can I give him Gatorade or Pedialyte?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 11 years old | 7 lbs

My mother has pneumonia. My 11 year old toy poodle sits with her all day. Yesterday, my dog woke up with a cough. I thought he was choking on something at first but then it happened again. I am going to try and get an appointment with my Veterinarian ASAP, but I need some help until then. He won’t drink water anymore. Can I give him Gatorade?

You can give diluted pedialyte or I would recommend giving a veterinary product such as NaturVet Pet Electrolytes Concentrate Dog & Cat Liquid Supplement, 16-oz bottle. This can be found at your local Petco or online. I would hold off on giving any electrolytes though as what you are describing does not sound like dehydration is the problem. I would wait and speak with the veterinarian in person and discuss what treatments are needed first. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns!
