My guinea pig isn't peeing and has green discharge from his peehole.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | 1 year and 11 months old | 8 lbs

My male guinea pig who is 1-2 yrs old has not been peeing for 2 or more days but instead, has been having this substance come out of his urethra/peehole. I’ve looked up symptoms online, trying to find this exact substance but haven’t been able to find anything similar. It can either be a UTI, bladder/kidney stone (even tho most of this is just soft) or anything else. The substance is clear/see through with green undertones.

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infections and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. Kidney stones are possible as well. These signs must be checked as soon as possible as urinary tract infection can be dangerous in male (especially neutered) guinea pigs as it can develop into a urinary tract obstruction/blockage. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
