Husky had puppies in sand. Should I move them? How to stop smothering?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 20 lbs

My husky gave birth in a sand hole even though I had prepared a whelping box for her. Is this ok or should I move them? If so, when is appropriate? Also, how do I prevent her from accidentally smothering her puppies when she lays down? TIA

I would move Misty and her puppies to the whelping box today. Typically mother dogs are pretty good at not laying on their puppies and smothering them, it's their natural instinct to not do it. You don't have to do anything unless of course you see her laying on them.
