Is my cat in heat or injured? She's crouching, cooing, and slow.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 lbs

Hi, yesterday my cat started sitting in a crouched position and is cooing constantly. We have a dog that she plays with so I thought perhaps she was injured but she doesnt seem sensitive to the touch but she does not want to be held. Today she is somewhat lethargic but still following me everywhere. Gait seems ok, but slow. Still jumping on counters, etc. Thanks so much

Nara has an odd posture to her back and based upon the way she is standing, I suspect she is either in heat or she has an injury to her back. If you are familiar with cats, you can generally tell if they are in heat by the behavior. You may want to do some reading about this. If you are uncertain or want to play it safe, have Nara examined by the veterinarian. I also recommend to have her spayed because this has many many health and behavioral benefits: https://www.petcoach.co/article/spaying-ovariohysterectomy-the-benefits-in-cats/ I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
