Why is my rat lethargic with hard breathing & red nose after choking?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rat | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 1lb

My rat choked on a chip the other day. I did the Heimlich manuver because someone said it helped their rat to stop choking. Now, she is acting very lethargic & is breathing very hard/having trouble breathing and she wasn't before. Plus, she's skinny, even though she is eating/drinking. It's been going on for a few days, and it's getting worse. Also all of a sudden she has a lot of porphyrin from her nose. Could I have hurt her or does she just need to recover from stress?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jade. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian. She could have a developed a condition known as aspiration pneumonia. This is an infection in the lungs that occurs secondary to choking on food. Her veterinarian will examine her and discuss diagnostic and treatment options. I hope this information helps!
