What homemade dog food and supplements are safe for pancreatitis?

Hello, I need help on finding the best homemade dog food recipe/ full supplement for a dog with a history of acute pancreatitis. For the past month my dog has been on a home cooked diet consisting of (lean ground beef, rice, nonfat cottage cheese, pumpkin squash, broccoli) he hasn’t had any recurring issues. I found a multivitamin called (GNC pets multivitamin plus). Is this a good product should I add salmon oil for extra omega 3 and should I add anything to his food such as chicken liver?

I would get recipes from the two sites that I link below. They are run by veterinary nutritionists, and then you won't need to give any extra things to Charlie such as vitamins. Studies have shown multivitamins really don't work anyway. https://secure.balanceit.com https://www.petdiets.com

Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. There are some supplements you can try that have been suggested to help reduce the occurrence of acute pancreatitis. I typically recommend a low fat diet along with omega 3 fish oil (Welactin fish oil for dogs) as well as vitamin E supplementation. Some veterinarians have recommended using digestive powders to help try and reduce the work that the pancreas needs to do to digest food. Hi there. If you're making your own food for Charlie, that's great! This can definitely be a good way to manage dogs who have food allergies or sensitivities. But, you do need to make sure that the diet you're feeding is complete and nutritionally balanced for long-term feeding. I would recommend using www.balanceit.com or www.petdiets.com to formulate an appropriate diet for Charlie, using the ingredients of your choosing. These websites will help you determine what ingredients are needed in what amounts, and will also advise you on any supplements that may need to be added.

Is there any enzyme or supplement that i can use for my dog who has recurrent pancreatitis and gall bladder stones,he s on a low fat diet already. Thanks
There are no supplements for either of these conditions. However the low fat food is the gold standard for pancreatitis, and can also help with gallbladder stones as well. Gallbladder stones should have also been treated for with a long course of antibiotics and gallbladder medication (i.e. Ursodiol). If you are still looking for other natural options, then its best to consult with an alternative medicine vet. They are good at recommending alternative treatment options that may not have clinical backings, but can be anecdotal in some pets. Best of luck with your pet Rocky moving forward. Take care!

What is the best alternative treatment for dogs with pancreatitis?
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Hank. Acute cases of pancreatitis can be severe. Some dogs even require hospitalization, while most need medications and fluid therapy. As far as long term management, I typically recommend a prescription ultra low fat diet. This is the single most effective thing I have found to prevent a reoccurrence. If you are interested in home cooking for your dog, then I recommend using a recipe from a veterinary nutritionist. I like the website www.balanceit.com. In cases of chronic pancreatitis, a high potency fatty acid supplement can decrease pancreatic inflammation. I hope this information helps!

Good evening. A yorkshire terrier of about 16months was found with pancreatitis. Beside the can food with low fat provided and found in shops, what home made food can be introduced slowly in her diet?
I would feed only the low fat canned or dry diet (royal canin intestinal low fat is my preferred option) for 6 weeks to promote recovery. After this a little boiled skinless chicken, white fish, low fat cottage cheese or egg can often be safely added as well as brown rice and pasta cooked without any additional fat. Add no more than one ingredient per week and monitor for any colic or abdominal discomfort

Use caution when giving any fatty supplement to a pet with a history of pancreatitis. Too much may cause a flare up or aggravate an existing case of pancreatitis. Cosequin DS or Dasuquin are excellent joint supplements that can be given to dogs. Search www.pet360.com for products. Discuss an appropriate pain management protocol with your vet to provide relief if your dog has difficulty moving around.

Hi there. So sorry that Archie is having this issue. In all honesty, it is best to put him on prescription low fat diet as that is exactly what he needs. Pancreatitis is very serious. With each bout of pancreatitis the pancreas sustains more damage and can no longer work properly. Many dogs will end up with diabetes, cancer or severe digestive issues. You are FAR better off with the prescription diet instead of you guessing what to feed him. Talk to your vet about one of the prescription diets like Hill's i/d low fat (it comes in cans and dry food). Boiled chicken and rice is not bad but it is not a balanced diet. You are correct, the fat content should be between 6 and 10%. Hello, sorry to hear about Capone. Yes there are protein supplements that can be added to food, however, these are typically better formulated by a nutritionist. Additionally, his weight loss may not be from the food itself but more so from his chronic pancreatitis or this could be signs that there is something else going on with him. If his weight loss continues, he may need to have more extensive diagnostics to look for evidence of other diseases. With chronic pancreatitis, he could eventually develop a deficiency in pancreatic enzymes that help digest food, and he may actually not be absorbing all of the nutrients in his diet. Talk with your veterinarian about testing for exocrine pancreas insufficiency (EPI) and consulting with a nutritionist. Hope this helps and best of luck.
