My puppy has diarrhea with blood spots. When should I take her to vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Dorgi | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 25 days old | 12 lbs

My pup is almost 8 months old. She is a dachshund-corgi mix. She has been having diarrhea the past 2 days. Today will be the 3rd. I noticed some blood spots in her poop. I feed her Origen. But stopped when she started having diarrhea. I’ve been feeding her white rice and oatmeal. Her energy is still the same. She has no problem eating. Her poop has gotten better. The only concerning factor is the small blood spots everytime she poops. Is this something I should worry about and take her in?

Yes, this is something to worry about and have Lulu seen by a vet. Whenever a dog has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, especially when you see blood, it's time to see a vet. I'd take her into one now.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lulu. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. You have given it long enough for the diarrhea to potentially resolve on its own. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication at this point. Being a puppy it is easy for her to become dehydrated from losing excess fluid in her stool. Offer her plenty of water. She may be experiencing intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection or overgrowth related to stress or a diet change. Other times a definite cause is not determined and supportive treatment is recommended. I hope this information helps!

When there is blood in the stool I do become a little more concerned. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however I would still recommend an examination with a veterinarian tomorrow. That being said if he had a very bloody stool tonight, one that looks like raspberry jam, then he should be seen immediately. If he is developing a problem called HGE they can get very sick very quickly. If he starts vomiting that also increases my concern. I hope he improves quick.

Lulu has had diarrhea throughout the day, but she just pooped and there was blood. I gave her an anti diarrhea medicine. Is there anything else to do?
If the next bowel movement also contains blood then it should she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. If she starts vomiting, not eating, or acting lethargic then those are also signs to have her seen immediately. Encourage fluid intake as well. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Hi, I have a Pomeranian Chihuahua. Earlier today she puked twice and looked like she hadn’t chewed her food enough, she also has mild diarrhea and a little bit of blood in her stool.. she’s 5 months old
I recommend taking Lily to a veterinarian. This may be nothing but an upset stomach but when puppies get sick they can decline quickly so making sure she doesn't have something to be concerned about and making sure she is hydrated is a must. I would bring a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites and then your veterinarian can provide medication and food to help with the blood in the stool and help with the upset stomach. It can be a response to stress if there has been a change in diet or routine or caregivers or it can be a sign of an infection or pancreatitis. Anytime there is bloody diarrhea, especially in a small dog, it is recommended to see a vet as soon as your can to start treatment. In advanced causes it make them very weak and non responsive and often vomiting will follow

I cannot tell from the picture if there is blood in the diarrhea. Blood will either be red/pink or even dark brown/black. This diarrhea looks yellow. However, if Lucy is still having diarrhea after not eating for 24 hours, you should take her to see your veterinarian right away as there could be something more serious going on.

I think you should recheck with your vet if Luna is still not wanting to eat and still having diarrhea with blood present. While it's possible that she just needs a little more time on the medications your vet might also want to run some additional tests to make sure nothing else is going on - blood work or a fecal analysis might be recommended.

I worry about bloody diarrhea in puppies, because Parvo infections can start this way and quickly become life-threatening. It's good that she's acting normal at this time, but best to have her seen by a vet in the next 24 hours. They can help determine the severity of this and give the appropriate treatment. Blood in the stool and diarrhea could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have O’Ryan seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as diarrhea and blood in the stool can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. I recommend taking in a fecal sample from O’Ryan to your vet as well, as that may aid them in making a diagnosis. Good luck, and I hope he feels better soon!

That is a lot of diarrhea for her to have and I worry she will become dehydrated from the fluid loss. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication depending on the results.
