My dog's scaly nose and watery eyes aren't sunburn. What is it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 years and 10 months old | 22 lbs

Our bitch’s nose comes out in scales constantly, and she lacrimates a lot. We live in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2400m above sea level. Some vets here say it is just sunburn. But she has it during the rainy season as well, when there is little sun. We’ve tried applying collagen and antibiotic cream. No luck. Any ideas? Thanks from us and Tawket too!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tawket. I worry that she could have an autoimmune skin disease. This is where the dog's body attacks its own skin cells resulting in an ulcerated and cracked nose. A common type of this disease is known as discoid lupus. There are other types as well though. It is typically diagnosed by a skin biopsy. I would ask her veterinarian if this is a possibility. I hope this information helps!
