When can I stop wiping my puppy's paws to prevent coccidia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 28 days old | 15 lbs

Thor is 13 weeks old, we brought him home at 7 weeks, 2 days after getting him home he came down with coccidia. After 2 rounds of antibiotics, thankfully he is better. I have been taking preventative steps and using gentle puppy wipes to wipe his feet EVERY TIME he goes out bc I don’t want him licking his feet & possibly getting reinfected. My question is, at what point can I quit wiping his paws? He’s getting bigger & it’s getting harder to do. Thanks!

Hello. You can probably stop the paw wipes now. As Thor's immune system continues to mature, he will be better suited to ward off any possible issues he may pick up with his paws. I would, however, clean up any fecal material in the yard at least a couple of times a week to decrease the chance of contamination. This will really help in the long run.
