After parvo, when can puppies play together and go on grass?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 12 lbs

I have 16 week puppies. One of them got parvo so he got treated for it. The rest of the pups just got their first parvo shot. How long should we wait until they can be together? & go back to infected grass?

You cannot let them back together until they are fully vaccinated. One Parvo shot is not enough for protection, they need another in four weeks after the first until they are fully protected. Then they can be together, and out on the grass.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Parvo-virus is a very resilient virus that lives in the environment for a long time. For this reason, keeping the puppies, and their environments, separate for at least 2 weeks after Roxy is completely healed is recommended, and then I would clean Roxy's environment aggressively with bleach water, and keep the puppies away from the 'infected' environment for a week while you are cleaning it. The other puppy SHOULD be OK because she is vaccinated, however until she has her third set I would keep them separate, because as the first vaccines are being given, and as the mother's immunity is wearing down, there will be times when the second puppy is at risk. Best of luck with your little ones and I am glad she is feeling better after her parvo-virus.

Thanks for visiting Boop by Petco. It’s good to hear that your pup is doing well after contracting such a deadly virus. He is one of the lucky ones. To answer your question, the virus can shed in a pets poop for 10-14 days after being cured; therefore I would recommend waiting 15 days before allowing him to be around other pets. Even then I would probably only have him around pets that you know are vaccinated. It wouldn’t hurt to wait a full 3 weeks before having him go to dog parks and walking trails. I was fostering a litter of 6 pups. 5 died of parvo but 1 was not affected. How long before he can be introduced to other puppies?
Without some diagnostics like antibody testing, I would recommend to treat Tee as if he had been infected with parvo as well. Tee will not be able to meet any puppies that have not been fully vaccinated for parvo for 6 months. You will need to be very careful about who you expose to him because you don’t want that puppy to get parvo as well. Additionally, the home environment will be contaminated for 1 to 2 years so you cannot bring any unvaccinated dogs or puppies into the environment for that length of time. That also means you cannot go to any dog parks for the next six months because he will shed the virus in the stool and this could lead to exposure for unvaccinated animals as well. Socialization is very important and you need to make sure this happens. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

I would not recommend having any dog with parvo or parvo exposure around the5 healthy puppies. parvo is extremely contagious and it can take months for the parvo survivor to stop shedding the virus. Parvo can also live in the environment up to a year. I would not recommend taking these dogs around each other until the health puppies are fully vaccinated. That is distemper/parvo vaccines every 3-4 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age.

Parvo can live in the yard for a very long time. Your safest bet is to adopt an adult dog that is fully vaccinated. Your next best option is to adopt a puppy that is at least 16 weeks old and has completed their puppy vaccination series. A puppy is not really considered fully protected until they have had the full series of vaccination. As long as your puppy stays current on his [vaccination series](https://www.petcoach.co/article/vaccination-recommendations-for-puppies-puppy-shots) (boosters every 3-4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age), he can certainly go on walks in your neighborhood. In fact, it's very important to get him out and about at this age since the critical [socialization](https://www.petcoach.co/article/socialization-of-your-puppy) period for dogs last from 6 to 16 weeks of age - so he needs to be out seeing the world, the sooner the better. I would recommend avoiding [dog parks](https://www.petcoach.co/article/dog-parks-fun-and-games) and other busy areas where large numbers of unknown dogs have been, but it should be fine to walk him in quieter areas.

How long does it take for the parvovirus to become unactive in a back yard after having a dog that died from parvo?
Sadly parvo virus is resilient in the environment and can live for years. Where ever your previous puppy went to the bathroom is where it is most concentrated. If it is a hard surface such as concrete, you can bleach the area to kill the virus. In soil and grassy areas, it is impossible to get rid of it completely. If you get a new puppy, get them vaccinated every 2-3 weeks and keep them indoors to protect them. After 3-4 sets of vaccines, they should be protected enough to start going outside.

Yes she can now go out and play. She should have immunity from another infection of the same strain of parvovirus. If she's healthy now I would have her vaccinated against it just to give her the most protection. She should have another booster again in 3-4 weeks. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Giving one vaccine does not mean protection. The whole cycle for the specific disease that it is used has to be completed and at least 3-4 weeks pass for the dog to really be protected against a disease as that is what the immune system needs to build immunity. So the pup that is vaccinated is not protected yet and should not be taken outside and your other pup should also get vaccinated to get protection against those preventable diseases. Best of luck!
