Is it safe to open my dog's medication capsule for administration?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 28 lbs

If my dog was prescribed a capsule form, can we open the capsule and administer? or does it have to stay a capsule?

Ideally it has to stay in the capsule as most of them are resistant to oral (saliva) and gastric digestion to be then directly absorbed in the first part of the intestine. If you open the capsule the medication may be useless as ineffective.
