My dog licked face lotion with xylitol. Is a small amount toxic?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 11 lbs

I just discovered that my face lotion contains xylitol and my dog may have licked some of it. It had absorbed into my fingers already and I may have touched a towel or blanket he was licking. I’m assuming that would be an incredibly small amount and he should be fine. Would that assumption be correct? He is an 11.5 lb miniature dachshund.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Rolo. Even a small amount can be toxic, xylitol is so deadly to pets. You would see signs of toxicity within 15-30 minutes after ingestion, so watch him for this time. If you don't see any signs after this time, he should be fine. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If you have the packaging see if it tells you how many milligrams (mg) of xylitol it contains or you can call the company and ask. Bentley would have had to ingest 2410mg of xylitol for it to be a toxic dose. I doubt that him licking a basically empty container would have enough to harm him. But it isn't wrong to double check. My dog ate peanut butter with xylitol (I just found out that it's poisonous) the last time was 4 days ago (but I gave him the peanut butter over the course of a few weeks). He's not lethargic/gums are pink/he's been in good spirits/etc.

Snowball just licked a little bath and body works lotion. It was the amount that squirts our when you close the bottle will she be okay? Her mouth kind of smells like the perfume of it now.
The type of product is not really toxic, especially in small quantities like that. You could see some mild stomach upset or mouth irritation, but that is unlikely. You can try to squirt some water in her mouth to rinse it out. Signs of a problem would be drooling, licking lips, or wanting to eat, but I don’t feel this is likely to,happen.

I found my dog with an old piece of Trident . It looked to be an already chewed piece wrapped in the wrapper to be thrown away. She did not swallow it. Should I be concerned of xylitol poisoning?
If she licked it without swallowing it, it should not be a problem at all as it is just a small quantity. Strict monitoring for any sign of weakness or lethargy, depression, walking drunk acute collapse, vomiting, trembling or tremoring is needed. If you notice any of these signs Please take Xodie to your local vet.

How can I tell if my dog has xylitol poisoning?
Xylitol causes hypoglycemia and potentially liver failure. If Arlo May have ingested xylitol in the past 48 hours I’d recommend contacting the Pet Poison Helpline (www.petpoisonhelpline.com). If it’s been more than 48 hours I’d recommend seeing your vet to have them check liver values.

Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Colgate can contain a product called xylitol. This causes the blood sugar to drop drastically. If your dog is weak and not moving, please get honey or corn syrup and rub it on her gums right away. You then need to get her into a vet clinic as soon as possible. Large volumes of toothpaste (xylitol) can also cause liver damage. Best of luck with Lili.

Check the packaging to make sure it doesn't contain xylitol. If there is xylitol in it, take Kona into a vet immediately. Otherwise, licking it shouldn't cause a problem if there is no xylitol, but the plastic may cause some issues if he swallowed any pieces. You could see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in the feces, lethargy, or anorexia. If you see any of those signs, take him into a vet right away. Hopefully, though, he will be just fine. I hope this helps!

My dog grabbed my toothbrush and licked off the leftover toothpaste, I know there is xylitol in my toothpaste, I’m worried about her.

Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs, and ingestion is a medical emergency. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Thank you for your question. Based on experience at the ASPCA APCC (animal poison control center), dogs ingesting > 0.1 g/kg of xylitol should be considered at risk for developing hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), while doses of > 0.5 g/kg may be hepatotoxic (damaging to the liver). This would be equal to 100 mg/kg. If a 20 lb (9kg) dog ate .004mg of xylitol, this would be a dose of 0.0004 mg per kg so not toxic.
