Infected head wound on barn cat worsening. Should I take her to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

We have a barn cat that we noticed on Monday night that it had a small spot of blood and some swelling on its head, it’s gotten worse each day and it smells infected. We attempt to clean it daily but she rubs it on everything including dirt. Should we take her to a local vet, or just let it heal naturally?

I agree that the wound looks infected in your picture, and since it seems to be getting worse I definitely think you should see a vet. They may need to sedate Maggie if they’re is still swelling or a pocket of fluid that needs to be drained, and they can prescribe antibiotics and pain medication. I would be worried this wouldn’t heal without antibiotics.
