Is it normal for a male budgie to sit on eggs and not leave nest?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 1 month old | 0.0661 lbs

I have two budgies, a male and a female that had eggs 4 days ago, they seemed fine at first but today the male will not leave the nest box, he didnt go out to feed the hen nor himself and instead he sat on the eggs in a corner while the hen tried to push him around and step on him, what are they exactly doing? I dont think it is normal for the male to sit on the eggs or even stay in the nest box..

Thanks for reaching out about Bounty. This sounds like a situation with new bird parents and not sure what they are doing. Males will often sit on the nest while the female forages for food. So this seems extreme behavior but not necessarily odd. Good luck.
