My dog has an anal gland infection. Can I give her human meds?

My miniature Italian greyhound got her anal gland emptied. However one of them ruptured causing an infection. I did not have the money to pay for the procedure, the pain meds and the antibiotics. I have left over penicillin from when I was sick. Can I give her this until I can get her the proper meds after the weekend?

There are no OTC pain medications you can give Meeka. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Antibiotics are prescription only. The only way to get these medications is to have her seen by a vet.

I would not advise giving your pet human doses of amoxicillin. Mainly because this kind of pulse therapy can actually create resistant bacteria on your pets skin and create an even bigger problem. Also you aren't treating the fungal infection at all, so the itchiness and irritation will still be there. There are also stronger antibiotics for skin out there that can help reduce the chance of creating resistant bugs and also are more effective. Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Unfortunately there is no medication you can get for her over the counter, and she has to see a vet now. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Can u give dogs human antibiotics or is it dangerous for them
Many different antibiotics are used for both humans and dogs, the only difference is the dose given. Antibiotics should not be given without the advice of your veterinarian. Inappropriate antibiotic use can lead to resistant bacteria and may complicate any underlying condition which could delay diagnosis.

Anal glands live at 5 and 7 o’clock or so, not at 12 o’clock like you have circled. However other problems such as perianal dermatitis can be causing signs as well. Using warm water and Epsom salts to compress the area can be helpful to decrease irritation and pain. It sounds like he could have an anal gland abscess/infection. Besides keeping the area clean there isn't much more you can do at home. He would need an antibiotic to clear up the infection. Call your vet and see if they could work out a payment plan.
