My dog has a problem when in heat. What is it and how to prevent?

Hi can you tell me what the cause is for my 1 year old dog to jave this problem everytime she is in heat. This is the second time it happens. I would like to know if there is a way to prevent it please.

This is a uterine prolapse, and this can happen due to the hormones produced when a dog is in heat. The only way to prevent this is to have Roxy spayed. You need to take her into a vet now to have this treated, and I would spay her when her heat is over.

There are several possibilities.but I assume It could be a vaginal prolapse, or even a bladder prolapse. If it only happens during her heat cycle then it is likely hormonally responsive. It is not normal for a dog to not have a heat cycle until 3 years. It is also not normal for a heat cycle to last a month. I would be concerned about an infection in the uterus. This could potentially be life threatening and I would urge you to take Roxy to your veterinarian as soon as possible.

My dog is in her first heat and just got tired up with a male dog a few minutes ago, what do I do?
If this was an accidental or unwanted mating, you can have her seen by your veterinarian tomorrow. He or she can dispense a course of hormones to prevent pregnancy. It is similar to the "day after" pill for humans. The other option is to schedule a spay in the next couple weeks. It may be riskier because she is in heat, but you won't have to worry about her coming into heat again or accidental litters.

My dog has just finished her heat cycle (the fertile phase) and since yesterday her vagina looks like this, what could it be ? It has never looked like that before. she is a 7 yr old pitbull.
This looks like a vaginal prolapse. That is when the vagina turns inside out. This is very swollen and needs to be lubricated and then manipulated back into place. You can clean it gently with a warm wet cloth, then apply KY Jelly to it or Vaseline to protect the sensitive skin from injury, then I'd bring her in tomorrow morning to get this examined and treated. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. Her swollen vulva and the blood tinged discharge are consist with her heat cycle starting. However, the lesion in the pictures is abnormal. She could have traumatized herself by licking. If there is tissue protruding from her vagina, then I worry about a prolapse. If the area enlarges or seems to bother her, then she will need to see her veterinarian. I hope this information helps!

My 18 month old female german shepard/husky mix is on her heat cycle but her vulva is extremely swollen and is hanging out a good bit is this normal ...skin seems to be dry and she is bleeding not alot but the flow amount differs through out the day
Thank you for submitting your question regarding Athena. Your pictures are a bit fuzzy, but she does appear to have tissue protruding from her vulva. This may be a vaginal prolapse. She will need to see her veterinarian to confirm this suspicion. If this is the case, it will likely repeat with each subsequent heat cycle unless she is spayed. Actually while she is bleeding she is in pre-estrus. When the discharge becomes fainter and more transparent she is actually nearing estrus, ie becomes fertile. Now is the dangerous time, ie for the next three weeks you will need to watch out that she does not get in contact with a male. Unfortunately males can smell a female in heat for more than 2 miles away and will try to even break in to wherever your dog may be housed. I think you may want to keep the puppy panties on her in order to avoid an "accident". She will not need to see the vet unless she starts to drink and urinate a lot and gets a yellowish or greenish discharge. That would point to a uterine infection.
