Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 39 lbs
My dog got into the trash yesterday evening. We racked our brains and we don't think there was anything in there that could be hurtful to him except a small amount of guacamole. However, ever since he got into the trash he is drinking excessive amounts of water (an entire bowl at a time, multiple times in a few hours). He is acting fine, his stool is kinda soft, but hes eating fine. We don't understand why the excessive water and need to pee every hour or so. Any ideas?

I am sorry to hear about Beaux! It could be that he ingested something high in sodium/salt and this is causing his excessive thirst, but we do worry about things like grapes and raisins causing kidney issues, so if anything of that nature was in the trash I would recommend an exam right away, or if any medications could have been in the trash. If the excessive drinking continues past today, or if he begins vomiting or acting lethargic a visit to the vet today is recommended as we do worry about them developing an obstruction of the intestinal tract if they swallow something that gets stuck, or pancreatitis. Best of luck to you and Beaux!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beau. You need to seek veterinary care for him today. That is a very long time for such a small breed dog to go without eating. Despite the increased water intake, he is likely dehydrated if he is not urinating. He will likely need bloodwork. Pancreatitis does not typically cause an increase in thirst. So while this can be the problem, other causes need to be considered. For example, diabetes will cause an increase in thirst. I hope this information helps!
