My husky isn't eating his food. Why is he suddenly refusing kibble?

My husky isn’t eating his dinner today. He usually eat all his food and this is the first time he’s not interested in his kibble. What could be wrong?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Ace. Not eating can be a sign of illness, but given this is the first time he's done it, I wouldn't get too worried just yet. Keep an eye on him for now, and if he doesn't eat breakfast in the morning, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

My husky isn’t eating her food. She is digesting some beef I feed her cooked. Not seasoned or nothing, and she’s defecting and urinating fine it seems. She’ll eat doggie treats but not dry dog food!! She’s a year and a half. Or so. I took her in from

Hey so I have a husky and we usually Feed him wet food mixed with dry food and he's not eating he's the first one to chew his food down but he hasn't been eating not treats or anything HELP
Lack of appetite is often the first sign of a disease, it can be something very mild or something very serious an it is a very general sign as well, so without any other symptom it is basically impossible to know what is wrong. if Max continue to suffer from lack of appetite for more than 48 hours i would definitely recommend taking him to the vet for a checkup, he might need to have a blood test done if nothing obvious shows up during the physical examination.

Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Oberon isn't vomiting or having diarrhea, I would withhold food from him for 12 hours. He may be nauseous. If he is still refusing food after 12 hours I would take him to a vet for a thorough physical exam to find out why. Good luck and kisses to Oberon!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is likely behavioral at this point. Meaning that he knows that you will get another food in a little bit if he does not eat that one. I would stick to one. If he skips dinner or breakfast that is fine and is unlikely to become an actual issue. You can add chicken broth, dog grade gravy, ham, among other things to his kibble to make it more palatable but I would recommend you stick to one diet and see how that goes. Eventually he will learn that he has to eat it. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! It would be best to try to switch her food to another puppy brand. However, it is important to continue her on puppy food for at least another 2-3 months. This will let her grow appropriately as needed. You may try highly palatable kibble blends like the shredded blend diets from Purina Pro Plan or possibly canned food. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! If Norik is acting fine and this is the only meal he skipped then I would still try to offer him food in the middle of the day. You can try adding water to the food or a teaspoon of canned food. Dogs rarely will starve themselves. Don't stress and just offer more food later! If you have to go to work then put a small amount with him or offer food at his next normal feeding time. I hope this helps and good luck!

This can be so frustrating! I should know because I have a labradoodle who does the same thing. After much medical testing and experimenting, I found nothing wrong with my dog and just keep dry food out for him. He eats when he wants and sometimes he does go a day or two without eating much. That’s exactly what I’d try for your pups. Some dogs are just finicky eaters. Honestly, your huskies look to be an appropriate weight so if you are concerned, ask your vet if they need to gain weight. You’d be surprised how many pet parents parents call ideal “skinny”. Of course if this minimal appetite is ever accompanied by vomiting, true weight loss, profuse diarrhea, or any other worrisome signs, please see your vet right away.

Lethargy and a loss of appetite are both signs of illness that can include dental disease, systemic illness, infection, or injury. Without seeing her in person, I can't narrow it down. I'd have her seen by a vet today. The vet can diagnose what is causing her symptoms and can treat her. Best of luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! With puppies, I don’t advise many abrupt changes in diet, as it can lead to vomiting and diarrhea. I prefer wet food for young dogs, as a general rule; I also tend to recommend sticking to one diet consistently. If we start adding “enticements” to food to encourage dogs to eat, they tend to hold out until something “better” comes along. When he’s hungry, he will eat! They can only hold out for something “better” for so long, so occasionally a little tough Love is needed. If he refuses to eat for more than three days, the behavior is persistent or you are concerned, then I would recommend either reaching out to your regular veterinarian or scheduling a consult to discuss it further.
