My spayed dachshund is humping and her fur is changing color. Why?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old | 7.5 lbs

I have a 3 year old female miniature dachshund who has been neutered and for the past couple weeks, she’s started humping us like crazy every night! Super weird, considering she’s never done anything like this before. I’ve noticed too that her fur texture has started feeling different and her fur is also changing color almost.

Humping is usually not a sexual thing, especially in fixed animals, though if she was spayed very recently, it can take a few months for hormones to even back out. That said, it may be more of a dominance or behavioral issue. Trying to deter Ruby from this behavior by distracting her with another toy, walking away, etc. Is best. As for the fur changes, while hormones can affect coat, I would also look to make sure she is eating a balanced diet, along with checking for any skin issues such as parasites, etc, that may cause changes. Vitamin E can help with coat health, as well as fish oils, but if it continues to change or you're concerned, having a vet take a look is best.
