My cat with URI eats wet food but won't drink water. Should I worry?

My cat was seen by a vet he has a upper respiratory infection he is eating wet food but still hasn’t really drank any water should I be concerned?

Wet food has a high concentration of water, so he is getting from there. You can add water to the wet food to give him more. Plus he may be drinking water at night. Cats tend to drink water in secret.

Wet food does have a higher moisture content, so your cat may be getting enough water from the wet food that he doesn't need to drink anything additional. It's good that you see him drink a lot of water when he eats dry food, and you can add some more water to his wet food if you want just to make sure he is getting enough water :-)

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Ada! If she is eating I wouldn't worry! There is much more moisture in canned food than dry. It is very common to see a drop in water intake when cats are on an all canned food diet. If you are still worried add some water to the canned food. Do so a little at a time as to not make it too soupy and her not like it. I hope this helps and I wish Ada a speedy recovery!

Hello. Romeo may be getting plenty of water from his canned food, so you probably have no worries. The things to look for will be if his urine becomes more concentrated & has a much darker color ( urine in the morning is usually always a little darker than the rest of the day ), if his activity level drops off, his eyes seem a little sunken, or when you gently pinch some skin over his shoulder area the skin does not immediately snap back. These can all be signs of dehydration. If you want to try & increase his water intake, you can offer chicken or beef broth or stock in a bowl separate from his water. Just make sure it is low sodium. I'm sorry Lilly has been sick! Wet food has a higher moisture content than dry food, so she is getting some water in her by eating that. Also she is getting fluids, so she is getting water there too. If she wasn't getting fluids, I would be worried about her not drinking water, but in this case, I'm not. When the fluids run out, feed her wet food and add water to it.

Poor Sourpatch! You typically should start to see some improvement within 24-48 hours, but it can be longer based on the severity of the infection. He likely isn't using the litter box because he hasn't eaten or drank, so he has no need to pass anything. When cats have a respiratory infection, they can't smell their food. Smell is very important to cats, and they won't eat something if they can't smell it. To tempt him to eat, I would gently warm up really smelly wet food, such as sardine or fished based. That will get some moisture in him as well, and hopefully he will start eating soon. If he still isn't eating after trying this in another 24 hours, I would take him back into the vet.

If your kitten is eating all wet food, he will get most of his water needs from the food. I would hold back on the steamed fish, only offering it as a treat, as more than that may upset the nutritional balance of the kitten food you're feeding. Also, if he is weaned, he does not need milk and may develop diarrhea if he gets too much. Again, a little taste, as long as there are no adverse effects is fine. Always make sure he has clean, fresh water available, but don't worry if you don't see him drink. To make sure he's getting enough water, you can mix some in with his wet food and/or offer him some low sodium chicken broth to drink. As long as he is healthy, happy and active, then you're doing the right thing.

Congratulations on your new addition! If you haven't previously fed 100% canned food before, you may not be used to how infrequently cats will drink water. My cats are also on a 100% canned food diet, and I rarely see them drink water (maybe once a week). That is because they get almost all the moisture they need from the canned food. It is important to have fresh water available to her at all times, but I would not be worried about not seeing a cat on 100% canned food not drink. If you're concerned, you might consider adding some water to her caned food or adding a running fountain since most cats prefer that to drink from. If Bronte seems stressed otherwise, you could try a couple of things. One option for decreasing stress is to add a Feliway Diffuser ( https://www.feliway.com ) to your house. My cat is required to eat urinary tract control food. Is it okay to feed him regular canned cat food as long as I add water to it?
Regular food is much less effective in preventing recurrent urinary tract issues in cats which are very prone to repeat episodes - it is impossible to say how sensitive he is and without trying you will not know but there is a chance he could relapse on ordinary canned food. Urinary diets tend to be adjusted to maintain urine pH to prevent crystals and are restricted in minerals and use only high quality protein sources to minimise the risk of urinary tract issues as well as providing an important source of fluids compared to dry food. The very best option in affected cats is urinary canned food but in many cases a high quality, commercial canned food is sufficient - if he relapses on this you will have to source the urinary prescription food as a treatment and prevention

My vet had me switch my cats diet to prescription cat food for urinary care but she won’t eat her dry food after mixing it with the urinary care dry food but is eating the wet food for urinary care.
If she is eating the prescription canned diet, that's fine. It is probably better since it has significantly more moisture than the prescription dry food. You can try feeding just the canned diet or mix in a bit of warm water with the prescription dry.

Leo may not be eating because he can't smell is food. When cats can't smell their food, they won't eat. Try gently warming really smelly wet food like sardine or fish based. If he eats that, then add the lysine to it. Also try bringing him into the bathroom when you take a shower or putting him in a room with a humidifier. The steam may help his congestion. If he really starts having trouble breathing, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck.
