My bird won't eat pellets. Is it okay to make him hungry to eat them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 1 day old

I’m trying to convert my bird into eating pellets but the only time he will eat pellets is when he has been starved for two hours and above and there are only pellets in his bowl. (Pellets are in the bowl all the time) he will only eat a small amount every time he eats pellets. I’ve try so many methods I saw online and none of them works. Should I continue only give pellets to him or is that really bad for him? What should I do? Any suggestions? Thank you!

Thanks for reaching out about Ivy and agree it is often difficult to convert birds to an all pellet diet. Being persistent with him, as you are, and he will eventually come around. Allowing him to be hungry for a few hours should do no harm. Have you tried different brands of pellets as they probably have different tastes, colors, smell, etc. Good luck.
