My dog has a red bump with a hole on his neck. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 2 months old | 54 lbs

My 1 year old pit mix has a eraser sized red bump with a small dot hole in the middle on his neck, near his collar. My boyfriend noticed this bump yesterday and thought it was a pimple. Today it was much larger and had some dried blood around it. Can I treat this at home or does it require a vet visit?

The hole is suspicious for the entry point of a wire or grass seed. It could also indicate a small abscess. I recommend to have Finn examined so that the area can be flushed and explored for a grass seed or other foreign object. Also make sure to protect the area from any scratching. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
