What is the best shampoo for a Lab that skin is flaking?

Use a pet shampoo that is oatmeal based. if you can find the accompanying conditioner, this would help as well. also, start Coco on an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this will help improve the skin's health. Please feel free to post any additional questions.

You will want to find something that has oatmeal and possibly even hydrocortisone in it. There are many brands. If you don't mind buying online duoxo calming is one of my favorite shampoos for itchy skin.

I would give him fish oil in the diet to improve the coat. I recommend an aloe and oatmeal moisturizing shampoo, and make sure you are using a flea control product as having fleas causing excessive itching will irritate the skin. Also as he’s a puppy please make sure he’s been treated for internal parasites which can cause a poor hair coat. To control the itching you can use Benadryl. He should be bathed no more than once every 4-6 weeks. Use a pet approved shampoo for puppies. You can use plain, unscented baby wipes or pet wipes to spot clean him in between baths and as needed. An essential fatty acid supplement, usually a fish oil, can be added to the diet to promote healthy skin and coat. Product choices include EicosaCaps, DermCaps or Welactin.

My lab has really dry skin after shedding her coat
It could be Cokey has dandruff. I'd try giving her a bath with a moisturizing shampoo for dogs. You can also add some fish oil to her diet. She can have 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined. I hope this helps!

The best thing for dry skin is to add a fish oil supplement to the diet. Something like one of these products. The flakes are most likely the dry skin coming off. You can give him an omega3 fatty acid supplement for sure. You need to use a product made for dogs. My dog has great soft fur but is super itchy sometimes. Is there anything I can put on her skin to help sooth it?
You can wash Luna in an oatmeal shampoo and use the associated oatmeal conditioner, just make sure it’s a pet product, and this may help. Other things you can do is feed a diet aimed at skin health such as Nutro or Royal Canin. You can also add in an omega-3 fatty acid for dogs. Cocker Spaniels do suffer their share of skin conditions and one of the most suffered are seborrhea and dermatitis, which can cause a strange odor and result skin that is itchy, oily, flaky skin You should have your veterinarian examine your dog to find the cause of his skin condition so the correct treatment can be initiated. Apart from consulting with your vet, there is something you can do to help. Try a medicated dog shampoo using one that contains anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-microbial ingredients. Don’t expect the condition to go away overnight. Follow the instructions and advice of your veterinarian as he can diagnose the cause and treat specifically for whatever condition your dog suffers from.

I have a 7 year old lab who I got when was two and hasn't been to the vet since. She has very irritated, itchy, flaky skin and I have no idea how to help her get her hair back. Any suggestions?
Poor Marley's skin looks irritated! In order for her to be able to get her fur back, the cause of the itching needs to be diagnosed and treated. This itching can be caused by fleas, mites, ringworm, or allergies. If she isn't up to date on her flea treatment, she will need a spot on treatment such as Advantage or Revolution. You will need to disinfect the environment as well. If she is up to date on her flea treatment, I recommend taking her into the vet for an exam tomorrow. The vet can do blood tests, skin scrapings, and use a Wood's lamp to diagnose allergies, mites, and ringworm. Once the cause of the itching is found, the vet can prescribe the appropriate treatment. Tonight, you can give her an oatmeal or Epsom salt bath to see if that helps temporarily with the itching.

Hello. The problem with using oils on the coat is the residual greasiness. If you want to use something, use a leave-in conditioner made for dogs, either post bathing, or one of the mousse rub in ones. The best way to get oils into the coat is to feed Arjun omega 3 fatty acids, so a good fish oil supplement daily. I would administer 1 000-1200 mg capsule twice daily & in a couple of weeks, his coat should start looking a little better. The longer you give it, the better it will work. You could add in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement to help with this. It helps to moisturizer the skin from the inside out essentially. Also you can bathe him in an oatmeal based shampoo and a crime rinse afterwards.
