My puppy had parvo. Can my new chinchilla get infected by it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My roommate recently adopted a 5 month old puppy that had parvo when it was younger. The shelter said it tested negative for the virus, but to keep an eye out just in case. I'm getting a chinchilla soon and I am wondering if they are susceptible to being infected?

No, parvo virus is species specific so the Chinchilla cannot get parvo from the puppy. Do know however that Parvovirus is extremely hardy and will survive in the environment for 6months-2 years. The puppy will spread the virus in her stool for 6 months after she beat the virus, so she should not go to any parks or areas where she may expose other dogs. That also means no dogs who are not fully vaccinated against parvo should come in your yard or else they run the risk of an infection. The vaccine is highly effective but it is important to remember that no vaccine is 100% but most dogs will be fine. It's also important to remember that vaccines take 10-14 days to take full effect. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
