Why does my dog have a bald patch with black skin on his thigh?

Hi, our 7month German Shepherd has a bald patch on his thigh. It started off looking like a small scar when we got him at 10 weeks but has grown with him and the skin has gone black. It doesn’t seem to bother him or itch or anything but I was just wondering if you could tell me what it is? We’ve been given cream by a vet but it hasn’t helped.

I would recommend scraping the skin to check for any abnormalities, check his thyroid level as well and overall blood values to see if there is a systemic explanation for the hair loss. Once those have been ruled out, then pursue further testing such as skin biopsies, etc.
