My food-motivated Border Collie puppy won't eat. Is it the heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 18 days old | 44 lbs

I have a Border Collie (9 months). He is very food motivated and will usually finish his Hill’s food very quickly. The last two days, however, he has not finished his food once, and only returns a while later to finish. This is so out of character, but I have not noticed any other behavioural changes that can indicate illness. He is still active and playing, drinks water, etc. The only change was environmental, it’s summer where I am from, and I don’t know if the heat might have an impact?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sam. His abrupt change in behavior is worrisome. It is best for him to see his veterinarian. He could have an upper respiratory tract infection that is starting or maybe he is painful somewhere. Mild nausea can decrease an appetite as well. If his exam is unremarkable, then the heat could be a factor. You don't want to assume it is just the heat though and miss a subtle sign of illness. I hope this information helps!
