Why is my old dog vomiting and pooping bloody jelly? Vet says fine.

I have an small older dog- guessing her age is about 9 or 10. She is pooping red bloody jelly poop all over the house. Now she is vomiting. I’ve taken her to the vet twice & they continue to tell me nothing is wrong. Said liver and kidney & everything is fine.They took blood & did a full CBC. She doesn’t have worms and she doesn’t have an infection. This is insane to think nothing is wrong when she’s got explosive diarrhea. What could be wrong. She is old & lost her sight!

I'm concerned about her as well, and think she needs further testing like x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound. It could be something is going on that isn't showing up on blood work, like a tumor. I'd take her into another vet for a second opinion.

Good day my dog has stomach aches i think, she poops watery brown poop almost like blood jelly poop, she doesnt have an apitite what can it be?
Bloody, jelly-like poop along with loss of appetite and sometimes vomiting is often seen with a problem called HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis) - this is a very serious GI problem that requires hospitalization for IV fluids and supportive care. Other possible causes could include intestinal parasites like whipworms or hookworms, a severe systemic illness like liver or kidney failure, or a bleeding disorder of some kind. I would recommend having Cheeky examined by a vet right away - he/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

If she is still vomiting despite the medications then yes, you should be worried. I think you need to take her back to the vet for x-rays and blood testing. She could have an intestinal obstruction which can be very serious.

My elderly jack Russell bitch in the last 2 months has only twice been sick with what looked like congealed blood. It was very dark almost black with a jelly like texture and it smelt horrendous. She is bright otherwise, eating and drinking as normal
I'm glad to hear that Lucy otherwise seems to be eating, drinking and acting normally! However, it is very concerning that she has had vomiting with dark material that may or may not be blood. If blood is present, it is possible that she could have an ulcer in her stomach and/or intestines, severe intestinal parasites, exposure to a toxin, cancer, among many other issues. Even though this has only happened twice over 2 months, I still strongly recommend taking Lucy to her vet for evaluation. She may need to have abdominal x-rays and/or ultrasound, as well as some blood testing. From there, her vet will be able to advise you as to the best course of treatment. It sounds like their treatment didn’t resolve the symptoms. Things like pancreatitis or GI obstruction won’t show up on routine blood work, so I would recommend calling the vet today for what needs to happens next. If an obstruction is one of the vet’s concerns, they may recommend x-rays or ultrasound. If pancreatitis is a concern, then usually they need to go on IV fluids for a day or two.

Clearly the treatments that Panda is receiving are not addressing the true cause of her problems. She needs to be tested for intestinal parasites with a simple fecal test - parasites are a common cause of diarrhea and even vomiting and bloody stool. If there are no parasites, she should have blood work to determine if there is an internal problem, such as liver disease or pancreatitis, that could be causing the diarrhea. Ultimately, additional testing such as an abdominal ultrasound, may be required to find the exact cause. Ultrasound can suggest problems like inflammatory bowel disease.

I think it is fine that your vet tried a conservative approach initially. However since that hasn't worked now I think he needs to go back in for a recheck. I would recommend at this point definitely doing the x-ray and a fecal examination to check for intestinal parasites. In a senior dog, a concern is always cancer. It could be Bella has a tumor that is causing her to stop eating and causing vomiting. Some types of cancer don't show any blood work abnormalities, so I think doing an ultrasound as the next step is a good idea. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Jackson and your other dog are cute!! There are MANY causes for vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. Yes, there is concern for his kidney function because of his history as well as his age. Other causes are: viral or bacterial (even if your other dog doesn't have symptom), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ate something gross outside that isn't agreeing with him, food sensitivity. The blood on the stool indicated inflammation in the colon. I recommend that you consider having him seen today, which would have to be through an ER due to it being Labor Day. The Vet will at a minimum do blood work to check his liver and kidney functions they proceed from there. I hope this helps and I wish Jackson the best!

I would recommend that you talk to your vet about an abdominal ultrasound. Also, if your vet has not performed a rectal exam, that would also be a good thing to ask about. Since he is 11, my biggest concern would be a potential tumor. It could also be that he has inflammatory bowel disease. You could also use a probiotic for him which may be beneficial. Talk to your vet about a fiber supplement such as Metamucil as well, which could also be helpful. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!
