Is my dog's daily diet of bread, milk, rice making them overweight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I would like to know once and for all if the diet being fed to our dogs is unhealthy. Very single night my mother in law insists on feeding our dogs a bowl full of bread slices and and at least 200ml of milk each if not this she will give them rice (cooked) egg (raw) and canola cooking oil mixed togher. This is every night for dinner, I am convinced this is unhealthy and the dogs are becoming overweight however I am told she has looked into and it is fine. I am concerned.

Hi there. If this is being fed as one of their main meals for the day, then yes, it is unhealthy - this is not complete or nutritionally balanced, and is not an appropriate long-term diet for any dog. I would recommend feeding a good-quality commercial dog food such as Purina ProPlan, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. Any treats or supplemental feeding beyond that should make up no more than 10% of the total diet. If your mother-in-law wants to prepare food for the dogs at home, she needs to use the website www.balanceit.com to formulate an appropriate recipe, or consult with a veterinary nutritionist.
