Dog aggressive when cleaning rear? Is it pain or anal gland issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shihpoo | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old

My dog recently has been very aggressive towards me, baring teeth and biting when I’m trying to clean her bottom . She just recently is having problems getting all of the stool out. What can I do?

Hello, sorry to hear about Ellie. Its likely that she is painful in the area and doesn't want you to approach it. She may need to have a shave and clean of her rear and have her veterinarian look for any signs of a local infection which could cause Ellie to be painful such as an anal gland abscess. If you are unable to look at her rear on clean it, if there is a could smell, discharge, or bleeding from the area then please have Ellie seen by her veterinarian so that she may be better evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.
