Dog attacked: When to see a vet for wounds and pain management?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 14 days old | 50 lbs

My 4 month old german shepherd was attacked by a pit bull at the dog park today. I don’t know if I need to take him to the hospital or not. He isn’t limping or acting strange, besides being more cuddly. There is one open wound (right). He held down his food and had plenty of an appetite. If a hospital visit isn’t necessary, I just need advice on pain management. Can he have NSAIDS? Is there anything I can buy over-the-counter?

Oh no, poor Jax! Yes, I would definitely take him into see a vet for this. He could have internal injuries from the fight, and those wounds needs to be cleaned, possibly stitched, and he needs antibiotics. He also needs pain medication, and no there are no OTC ones you can give hi. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I cannot recommend giving him NSAIDs because I can't see him in person and say they are safe to give to him. Please take him into a vet hospital. Best of luck, and I hope he feels better soon!
