My cat is quiet and thirsty on Nystatin. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 14 years and 4 months old | 12 lbs

My kitty just starting Nystatin Ointment for a fungal ear infection. I've noticed increased thirst and my normally talkative kitty is very quiet. Is this a normal side effect of nystatin? Should i discontinue the drops? If I discontinue drops how long until he's back to normal?

Hello, this medication is actually very safe when used topically and does not have many reported side effects in pets. It may cause allergic reactions, but these area also rare and more common when used in combination with other medications. The signs you are describing however may be more consistent with dehydration or kidney disease. I would recommend continuing his ear medications, however, he may need some bloodwork to check his kidney values and hydration status. Contact your veterinarian schedule a recheck appointment as soon as possible. Hope he feels better soon and best of luck.
