My cat is lethargic, not eating, and hiding. Does he need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 years and 4 months old

My cat (2 years old black male) has been acting lethargic, sitting in a hunched position, and not taking to eating or drinking much. He has eaten a small amount of broth/wet food, and had one bowel movement and urination in the past 24 hours. He has taken to hiding away where we can't reach him. In the past, he has gagged/heaved after eating, and has thrown up once that I know of, but I didn't think much of it. Will he get better on his own? Can I do anything to ease his pain?

Hello, sorry to hear about Dickens. It sounds like he is feeling very ill and I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. His signs sound consistent with potentially being diabetic, especially if he is overweight. Other causes could include liver or kidney disease, since he has not urinated much in the last 24 hours. Finally, he could have a urinary obstruction but it doesn't sounds like he is straining to urinate from what you are describing. It doesn't sound like this is something that will go away on his own, so I think Dickens should be evaluated today for his clinical signs. He will likely need bloodwork and potentially an abdominal ultrasound. Hope this helps and best of luck.

That sounds like Ted is feeling pretty ill and is possibly also in pain. Since he is vomiting, not eating a lot and hunched over, it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP so he can be examined and tested for issues such as GI problems, organ function issues, illnesses, etc that are causing his symptoms.
