Why won't my senior dog's extreme skin itching respond to treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 5 months old | 110 lbs

My dog is around 12-13yrs old. He is an Indian Mongrel/Pariah breed. His health is fine overall considering his age but he has this skin problem which is not getting treated. He is eating normally, passing urine/stool normally. Tried showing it to 2 different vets, tried various lotions,soaps/shampoos, oral and injected medicines etc but nothing is working. He has Extreme itching. Please help me diagnose and treat my dog. I would be really grateful to you. Thanks in advance and God Bless you!

Hello, sorry to hear about Chintu. It looks like his skin disease has progressed quite a bit. He would likely benefit from a dermatologist to assess him and depending on what has been done, potentially, obtaining skin biopsies would be a next step. One potential cause could include allergies, however other more aggressive lesions like cutaneous lymphoma and fungal diseases should be ruled out. Unfortunately it is difficult to attain a diagnosis based on a picture alone, as this will likely need contributions from diagnostics, physical exam, and history to obtain the most likely diagnosis for Chintu. I would recommend seeing a dermatologist to obtain more specialized care and information. You may ask your veterinarian for a referral to a dermatologist near you. Hope this helps and best of luck.
