My dog caught a possum. Is vet's advice on rabies and antibiotics good?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

Yesterday Our dog brought a possum to our door. It’s was in our suburban yard and happened about 3 in the afternoon. She is up to date on rabies shots. Called the vet and they said unless we saw signs of behavior change don’t worry. But if we did notice a change they could start a antibiotic regime. is that advice good?

Hello. This is excellent advice, but I doubt you will need to place Ruby on antibiotics. Possum are very rarely implicated in the spread of disease, including rabies, so I would not be concerned at all. She should be just fine. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
