My senior cat isn't eating, has crusty eyes, hair loss, and scabs.

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 16 years and 1 month old | 12 lbs

My 16 year old, indoor only, male is sick. He isn’t eating well and he has black crusties around his mouth and eyes and yesterday I noticed his hair falling out and weird scabs on his belly (see pictures). I’m currently unemployed so I don’t want to take him in if I can help him at home. Any idea what this is or how I can help him?

Hello, sorry to hear about Clyde. The crusts could be an indication of nasal and ocular discharge which may be associated with an upper respiratory infection. Signs of an upper respiratory tract infection, in addition to the discharge, includes a decreased appetite, lethargy, and a fever. The hair loss around the belly could be consistent with scratching from allergies or over grooming. Other potential causes such as fleas and ring worm are less likely. You can give Clyde an additional 2-3 days to see how he does, however, if he has been like this for multiple days already, then you should consider seeing your veterinarian to get him evaluated. Hope this helps and best of luck.
