Is my French Bulldog puppy's morning cough and nasal mucus normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 24 days old | 9 lbs

I have a new 11 week old French Bulldog puppy. A week ago she was found with a small heart murmur that the vet was confident she would outgrow. Since then, the only issue we've had is that whenever she wakes up in the morning, she has a wet gagging/cough for about 3-5 minutes and she has mucus dripping out of her nose. I've been told this is normal for bulldogs but it just started happening. Is this normal?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Winona. I am concerned that she may have an upper respiratory tract infection based on the coughing and nasal discharge. If her symptoms persist, she will need to see her veterinarian. I do not think these are more signs even in her breed. As far as the heart murmur, if it does not resolve by 4-6 months of age, then she will need an echocardiogram. You want to be sure there is not a structural problem. I hope this information helps!
