My female dog has pyometra. Is surgery needed or can medicine work?

It looks like from the ultrasound report that Lucy has a pyometra. This is a severe infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment. I agree with your vet's recommendation to have her uterus removed surgically (spay her). Treating a pyometra with antibiotics is typically not effective, and the recommended treatment with the best results is spaying the dog. I would follow your vet's advice and have her spayed asap. Leaving her with a pyometra will make her sicker and sicker, time is of the essence in treating this infection. Best of luck.

Surgery is definitely the treatment of choice, as it is the only way to definitively resolve the infection. Was she diagnosed with a pyometra by your veterinarian? Typically, Xray or abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly) along with physical exam, history, and bloodwork findings are how we come to this diagnosis. I say that, because of course we wouldn't want her to go to surgery unnecessarily, so please understand that your vet would need to perform some diagnostics to determine that surgery is, indeed, the recommended course of action. Having said all of that, surgery is the preferred treatment for pyometra. Thank you for asking Boop by Petco!

If your dog has pyometra or infected uterus this is need for immediate emergency surgery to spay and remove the infected uterus. The vet may stabilize with medications and fluids if sick but surgery should not be delayed more than needed to make sure she is stable.

I believe my dog has pyometra and I understand that being spayed is the correct way to deal with this, although I am 100% sure my dog will not survive the operation, what can I do?
First off, I'm sorry Maggie has a pyometra! Yes, you are correct that spaying her is the correct way to deal with it, and I do recommend having it done right away. The longer she has the pyometra, the sicker she will become, which will make the surgery more risky. Leaving it untreated is fatal, and in my opinion, it's better to have the surgery done and try to save her life even though you do take the chance she may not survive the surgery. I have seen numerous dogs and cats survive the surgery. One option you have is to euthanize her instead of doing the surgery. This will put her out of her suffering from the pyrometra, but it does mean you lose Maggie for sure. In same cases, such as with an open pyometra, medical treatment with antibiotics can be attempted, but that that often isn't successful and cannot be done with a closed pyometra. Only your vet can determine if medical treatment is an option for her. I would get her into a vet immediately, as the longer you delay trea

Hello, sorry to hear about Laika. Success ratios for pyometras (infected uterus) may differ between regions. However, most pyometra surgeries are up to 90% successful. Complications associated with this surgery include bleeding, peritonitis, spread of infection and abnormal heart rhythms. In a paper published in 2014, they found that these complications can be seen post-operatively in about 25% of cases. Post surgery Laika should be exercise restricted for 2 weeks until her stitches (if any) are removed. She should wear a cone to avoid her licking at her own incision and your veterinarian will likely give you antibiotics and pain medications to give her at home. Not following strict exercise restriction and wearing a cone may lead to her incision re-opening up or becoming infected. Post the 2 week period, Laika may resume her normal lifestyle. I'm sorry Chutki has a pyometra. She won't get her another heat while having a pyometra. Unfortunately medical treatment of a pyometra frequently does not work, and surgery is the best option for her. It sounds like the treatment isn't working if she still has a discharge 15 days later, and this infection likely will get worse and can kill her if not treated correctly. I would strongly recommend getting her the surgery. Best of luck.

Pyometra is a serious and life threatening (if not treated) Infection of the uterus. Surgery after stabilization of clinical condition is definitively what is needed to save her life. Infection can be potentially spread and become systemic. Weakness is probably due to high temperature and to generalized illness. I am not sure if your veterinarian suggested that, but surgical treatment is needed. I'm sorry Bella has a pyometra! A pyometra is a life threatening infection, there are no mild cases of it. It could be that your vet is trying to treat it medically with antibiotics since it sounds like it's an open pyometra, meaning that the cervix is open and allowing drainage. In cases of a close pyometra, the cervix is closed, the infection cannot drain, and the uterus needs to be removed to prevent it from rupturing. With open pyometras, you can try to treat it medically with antibiotics, especially if the dog isn't systemically ill. This is a treatment option for an open pyometra. If you feel like you'd like more in-depth treatment, which would include spaying her to remove her uterus, you can speak to your vet about having that done or seeing another vet for a second opinion.

The question is, is it an vaginal infection or a uterine infection? if she is lethargic, drinking a lot, seems bloated and in pain then it is most likely a pyometra (uterine infection), this will require urgent surgery to have the uterus removed as medical treatment fail to resolve this condition in the vast majority of cases. if she is suffering from a vaginal infection this can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by your vet. either way you will have to take her to a veterinarian ASAP.

I have a 9 year old yorkshire terrier female dog we revently found out she has pyometra but she cant have an operation as shes weak and has cancer, is there any medication that well help to cure pyometra?
Antibiotics can be used, but they don't always cure a pyometra. The best treatment is surgery. If Narly cannot have surgery and she has cancer, it may be best to let her go peacefully. Pyometras make the dog extremely sick, and you do not want her to suffer if she cannot have surgery. There is no guarantee antibiotics will even help. I would speak to her vet about possibly letting her go if she can't have surgery. I am sorry.

I believe it would be better to have an ultrasound done first, preferably by a specialist, to confirm there is indeed a uterine infection. i have seen in the past cases such as Olive, where other symptoms of pyometra where absent (normal bloods, normal xray, no excessive urination, no vaginal discharge) and the dog ended up having a uterine infection after all, it can be sometimes difficult to diagnose. on the other hand these symptoms could fit many other diseases and in her condition it might be a little risky to put her through a surgery, especially if your vet is not 100% sure. at the end of the day it's up to you but you do need to make a fast decision.
