Puppy has fever & diarrhea. How long to recover? What if he won't eat?

How long does it take for my puppy to recover from fever and diarrhea? And what is the proper way of force feeding my puppy even if e refuses to. Thanks!

Depending on the cause of Toffee's fever and diarrhea as well as the treatment he is taking, it could take a week or longer for him to recover. If he's very ill, it could take him a couple of weeks before he's back to normal. I do not recommend force feeding, He could easily aspirate the food, leading to aspiration pneumonia. If he won't eat, the best thing to do is take him into the vet who can give him nutrients via an IV line as well as medication to try to stimulate his appetite. Best of luck.

Hello, sorry to hear about Toffee. He may need to be seen by a veterinarian to make sure that he does not have an infection with Parvovirus or has ingested something which is causing an obstruction in his GI tract. If these are both negative, then he may need to have anti-nausea medications and deworming to hopefully treat his vomiting and nausea. Please monitor for persistent vomiting, diarrhea, a decreased appetite, or lethargy and contact us if you note any. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Oh my. Poor guy. If he has a fever this can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection (i.e. Parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated). I would have him tested for parvovirus first and if that comes up negative he needs full panel bloodwork and a urinalysis. to fully evaluate him. He should be on antibiotics and fluid therapy to help bring down his fever. He also needs anti-vomit medication to prevent him from becoming dehydrated due to excessive vomiting. If his condition has not improved within 24-48 hrs, then you should consider having him hospitalized so that he can get around the clock care and treatment. Poor guy. I do hope that your pup Shadow is able to make a full and speedy recovery from his illness. For tonight you can try feeding him some slghly warmed up cans of baby food (meat and vegetables or squash) to try to entice him to eat. Only a small amount at a time to hopefully not induce his vomiting. Best wishes and take care.

Parvovirus is a very serious infection and it take at least a week for dogs to get better. Sometimes they have vomiting and diarrhea for 10-14days. It is very important that your puppy eats as soon as he keeps food and water down. Any high calories, easy to digest food will be good (for example, cooked chicken or turkey). If your puppy is reluctant to eat you should try and hand feed or even force feed him.

Dog Labrador 2 mos old. Voimiting white and diarrhea. Dewormed and schedule for 5 in 1 but suddenly he has fever. What should I do?
He might have eaten something spoiled that is causing this. withhold food for 6 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 4 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment ASAP.

I am sorry to hear he is not feeling well. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Young puppies need nutrition and will Parrish quickly without it. Viral infections such as parvovirus can cause fever and inappetance as well as many other possibilities. I'm sorry Buddy has been ill! Vomiting and diarrhea can definitely take a lot out of them, so it's a good sign that he's eating. I would expect that he should gradually feel better over the next couple of days if he's eating and drinking consistently. If at that point he's still not acting right I would have your vet recheck him. They may want check lab work to ensure nothing else is going on. Good luck!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Vomiting and diarrhea can occur secondary to conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, parasites, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Toffee evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. At the very least they can start him on medications to make him feel better and check his hydration status. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Have him examined by a veterinarian. Young pups can quickly develop dehydration which can complicate the underlying condition. Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites. If he is younger than 4-5 weeks, try an appropriate puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or PetLac. If he's older, a dry puppy food soaked in warm water or puppy milk replacer can be offered. By 8-10 weeks of age, he should be eating dry food.

With Toby bring such a young dog and being so ill I would highly advise that you take him to a vet who can hospitilise him on fluids. If he is vomiting and having loose motions I imagine he is very dehydrated.

I'm glad to hear that Romeo is playful and eating well! It sounds as though he's on the road to recovery. Don't worry - it's completely normal for dogs to go several days without having a bowel movement after experiencing diarrhea. However, if you see that he's straining to poop but can't go, or if he becomes lethargic, vomits or refuses to eat, those would be signs that he should be re-checked by his vet. The only way to know if he has a fever is by using a thermometer rectally. If he'll tolerate it, you can use any digital thermometer and insert it just half an inch or so into his rectum. A normal body temperature for dogs is 100.5 F to 102.5 F. That said, since he's eating and playing normally, and the diarrhea has subsided, there really isn't a need to check his temperature.
