My kitten accidentally took too much metronidazole. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 2.4 lbs

I misread the dosage of a metronidazole antibiotic prescribed for my 2lb kitten. .25ml 2x/day was prescribed and I gave her 25ml once. she is fine now but I am scared she may become very ill.

Sorry for the scare! One mLis much less scary! (And I was wondering how you got 25 mLs Into a kitten that small!) II would say stop the medication for 24 hours and monitor. The neurological side effects are still possible but much much less likely. If she’s doing well, restart the medication at the proper dose and call it a day!

I am extremely concerned about this. That is a 100 times overdose. Metronidazole at extremely high doses can cause serious neurological signs (seizures, even death.). You need to take her to an emergency vet IMMEDIATLEY and call the Pet Poison Hotline on the way. +1-855-764-7661 Best of luck to you and Moka.
