My dog is in pain. Can I safely give him another dog's pain pills?

Pet's info: Dog | Pekingese | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 15 lbs

My grandmas dog has a Chihuahua and she is having the same pain as my dog. It’s pain pills but it’s not prescribe to Tao would it be okay to give them to him or no? At least until we make a vet appointment.

No, this is not safe to give to Tao, please do not do this! Pain medication is dosed according to the patient's weight, and it comes in different mgs based on the patient's weight. You can very easily overdose him doing this, which can be fatal. In addition, pain medications are dispensed according to the dog's health status, and there may be a medical reason why one drug is appropriate for a specific dog but not another. I would not give this medication to Tao. Best of luck.

I would not recommend giving your dog pain medications that were prescribed for your cat. Typically cats and dogs can process medications differently. It might be a medication that dogs cannot take safely or does not work well. Also the dose will not be the same. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain medications you can give Mowgli. Many human ones are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. You need to take him into the vet to get him safe pain medication. Best of luck.

Is 81mg aspirin okay to give a Chihuahua?
I am afraid you should not give Aspirin or any other NSAIDs made for humans to a dog without the advice of the veterinarian who knows your dog well. Aspirin can cause bleeding ulcers and this could be fatal. If you suspect your dog is in pain, please contact your vet for an exam and a prescription of NSAIDs suitable for a dog. No, human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Many are toxic and can be fatal if given. If Mia is in a lot of pain, you need to take her into a vet immediately to get pain relief. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. My dog was neutered today and was sent home with carafate (surcarfate). I never known that to be used for “pain”, I was told by one doctor I could give him Tylenol 8mg per pound but I’ve also always been told to never give a dog Tylenol so is it safe
You are correct - sucralfate is not a pain medication, it is a medication that coats the esophagus and stomach when there is concern for stomach ulceration, irritation or reflux. The published dose for Tylenol is 10 mg/kg or about 4.5 mg per pound, but it can affect the liver or cause problems if used with other drugs so I would recommend contacting your vet before giving this medication. There is nothing over the counter that I'd recommend - unfortunately if Miko wasn't prescribed any pain medication it might be safest to see an emergency vet for a safe pain medication if Miko is in significant pain.

I would recommend discussing with your veterinarian if there is something you can switch him to that is more cost effective and still approved for use in dogs. You can also check into online pharmacies or box stores (such as Costco) that offer pet medications at a lower price.

I'm sorry that Moo-moo is hurt! Unfortunately, both ibuprofen and Tylenol are toxic to dogs, so you cannot give her either of these medications. There are no over-the-counter human pain medications that are safe for dogs, so I'm afraid that you will need to take her to the vet for an exam - he/she can prescribe a safe and effective pain medication for her if needed.

Poor Tao! If he's had back pain in the past, the certainly it could be bothering him again. He could also have a problem with arthritis, which is common in middle aged to senior dogs. I'm not sure if x-rays were done when he saw the vet the last time, but I do recommend making an appointment for him tomorrow with the vet. X-rays may narrow down the cause of his pain, and the vet can also prescribe more pain medication for him. Be sure to mention to your vet that you felt the last pain pills he received were ineffective, as there may be another pain medication that can be prescribed for him. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Rest him tonight, do not take him for a walk. Carry him up and down any stairs if he will let you. Take him out to potty on a leash, and bring him right back in when he's done. Try to limit his movement as much as possible tonight. I hope this helps!

Our english bulldog just had surgery today, and is in a lot of pain. We were told not to give him his prescribed Meloxicam until tomorrow. Is there anything we can do for his pain now?
Unfortunately, there are no safe OTC pain relievers you can give Tuck. Many are toxic to dogs and can fatal if given. He would have received pain relief before he left the hospital, which would be why you were told not to give him the Meloxicam until tomorrow. That being said, however, it's very concerning that he's in a lot of pain. By law, I can't say if it's safe or not for him to have it early, so I would either call the vet who did the surgery to let them know Tuck is in a lot of pain, or I would take him into an ER vet immediately who can prescribe him some safe pain relief.
