Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 3 months old
My cat Leo would venture outdoors daily and was fit and healthy. Last week he left home at 4.30pm, three days later my neighbour found him dead in her garden. His body had no injuries or marks, he was taken to a vet and placed in freezing. When I saw his body, his eyes were opaque and red, other than that there were no abnormalities. I just want to know what the most likely cause of death could be in an otherwise healthy, young, slightly overweight cat and why he didn't simply come home?

First off, I'm so sorry you suddenly lost Leo! There could be a couple of things that could have caused his death. It could be he got into something toxic, or he may have been hit by a car causing severe internal injuries but no apparent outside injuries. It may be that whatever ultimately caused his death made him so sick and/or injured that he was unable to make it home to you. If his body is still at the vet, you can request that the vet does a necropsy (an autopsy for animals) on him. That may give you some answers as to the cause of his death. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss!
