My kitten has diarrhea, is weak, and her bum hurts. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 9 days old

My little Kitten has had diarrhea for four days straight. She is eating the same food as her two brothers and they are fine. They eat dry cat food and still nurse, they drink water as well. Her belly is smaller than her brothers and she is less strong. Before and for a little while after she was born her mother had bad diahreaha, I dont know if that has anything to do with anything. I lightly pressed on her swollen bum with a damp paper towel and she cried out. Cause? What can I do?

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend taking Lea to the veterinarian as diarrhea in a kitten this young can quickly become life threatening. She may have parasites that need to be treated. Good luck, I hope she's better soon.

Hello. Diarrhea can be very common in young kittens. For the most part, it is almost always related to parasites, like roundworms or coccidia. It is most important to have your kitten examined, or at least have a fecal analysis done to prevent further scalding of the delicate rectal tissues. Sometimes antibiotics & probiotics are used to help heal the digestive tract. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
